Independence, Mo Jan 25th this Dear father and mother, i take my pen in hand to let you know that i am as well as i ever was in my life and hope these few lines will find you enjoying the same. I have concluded to write tri-weekly as i have very little to do since i wrote before we have made a descent on the secesh. Night before last at 11 pm Co K and Co B with some of the artillery men on horseback started out for the headquarters of the rebels. They went about 10 miles the artilleryman acted as cavalry and went ahead and come to where they was having a ball they surrounded the house and went in and behold they caught 22 of them. They took them up stairs put a guard over them and then danced with the girls themselves. They burnt 2 houses took about 40 head of horses and mules and come home. They got the overcoat and gun that they took from our boys. We have the prisoners here they will be tried soon and make them take the oath. They are a hard looking (sort?). We have fine times here in town. We don't drill any and have a chance to look around. We are all well with the exception of a few frostbitten ears and feet. My ear is getting better - don't think it will come off. Dave Newman and Henry May is getting well they have the yellow jandis. We get all we can eat and have a variety of things I will mention some first we have flour fresh pork meal beans cabbage potatoes turnips onions butter milk sugar coffee chickens turkeys geese molasses
