[Oct?] 1917 Dear Father Well we have finally started on our way Thursday morning the 18 we rolled our packs and went over to Garden City and got on an electric train and went down to Brooklyn navy yard and took the ferry boat down the Hudson to a great big ware-house about as long as from your ship down to the post office and about a black wide there were big docks running out into the river and five or six big ships laying alongside the U. S. S. President Grant and about 7. oclock we started on our trip. The boat was about 500 feet long and 50 feet wide and there are about 6000 men on her so. You can see how crowded
