January 1st in camp 1 mile from Columbia on the north side of Duck River not much excitement for New Year. 2nd broke camp early in morning & marched across the river through town & took the Clifton Pike marched through a very rich country Passed the Reb Gen Pillow's plantation, also the residence of Reb Gen Polk, marched 12 miles & camped within 1 mile of Mount Pleasant
