But the Federal troops rallied on a second line but Earlys' Brigade Confederate armed and was ordered by Johnston to make a detour to the left and strike the Federal Right in flank. He reached the ground in time with Beckhams Battery and Stewarts' Black Horse Cavalry; Bee made an impetuous attack, with skill and courage, which drove the Federal forces and they [retreated?] on the Sudley road towards the Sudley Ford. The center and left of the Federal army moved back on the Warrenton Turnpike - And then the battle on the Plateau at Bull Run was fought. An open field fight with [disbershments?] but the position of the enemy in their favor as their guns were under cover of the [crest?] of the [ground?] I will follow this with the Retreat of the 1st, 2 & 3 Mich. The 1st retired in order the 2 & 3 covered Retreats from Mitchells & Blackburns Fords - then the 2", 3" & 4" covered Retreat of Union Army from Fairfax to Washington, D.C. Then follows - extract of Col Willcox report - Sheet No. 11. - 2d Conn Infty - Jasper says the Black Horse Cavalry charged up the Pike to the Stone Bridge. East of the Bridge July 1894 He with about [about] 40 - 20 on each side of the Pike rallied & when the Cav'y came up & crossed the bridge they gave them one volley The Rebs [illegible] then made a second attempt but our boys picked each a [trooper?] + they fell like [leaves?] & the others retreated across the bridge & they did not see them again - He Jasper then turned to the north of the road - to get his haversack & a piece of bologna sausage which he'd pd. 1$ or 1.50 for - found a comrade wounded & carried him to the rear & gave up looking for his sausage
