Jan the 31 1883 Independence Iowa Jan 31st 1883 Dear friend Dear friend Mary I received your kind and welcom letter and was verry glad to heare from you and to heare you say that you was well I am well at present hopping that these few lins will find you all the same I had A letter from William and he said that oure schoolhouse was burnt down I was verry sorry to heare it but I am not sorry that Miss Aley must leave that neighborhood I think there will be more peace then and you said in your letter that Mary H had not been up to see you yet I dont hardly think she will come for she dont go enney place where John hant that is what Lilly told
