a satire is a poem which embraces a variety
of subjects, & indeed, in the earlier ages
of Roman literature, was written in
both prose and verse, thus as a vessel
containing different sorts of fruits, so
as to form a kind of "hodge, podge" was
called a "satura lanx", so did the word come
to be applied to the "farrago" of the Roman
satirists, the most eminent of whom tells us,
that his business is to that of - 
"Quidquid agunt homines, votum timor ira voluptas
gaudia discursus _____
