Somewhere in England, 28. December 1941. Dear Madam or Miss, You have had a good idea in putting your address in the pullover you sent for the troops in Britain. I am 30 & came back from the Far East after 6 years over there to do my duty towards my country, Belgium. It is awfully kind of you to have sent me this [O' Mass] present. In fact, I needed it very badly for after 6 years in tropical countries, you can well imagine if my blood is thin & poor though I am in good health. I feel the cold frightfully here. I don't know how to express to you my thanks for the kindness you have shown me. I shall never forget to think of Helen Fox & I hope later on to be able to reward your kindnesses to me in many ways. Please do write to me & tell me all about you & yours. I like to become a faithful correspondent of yours & may be you'll accept to become my [Godmother?] for the duration of the war, but may be it's asking far too much.
