and not united. In the old days hard moral patterns were sought. Education sought vainly to brand men who were first tied up for the purpose. Then in the 19th c came the ideal of scholarship and science. Look where its triumphs have led us. Too much simplicist thinking. We need no branding but fully developed minds hearts & characters (I don't try to define now like the sociologist vedants & the semanticists with their dreary nihilism). We need this just as much as we need techniques & science. It is strange passing strange that we have all this talk of science progress & all that with most scholars still sneering at any effort to connect in an integral way the tools we use & the purposes we put them to. And this in the face of a Hitler. But I must not get to preaching too much. I do think we still suffer from the over dose of moralizing of our fathers which was futile enough but still leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Affectionately yours Stephen H. Bush [Head of Romance Dept. Iowa] Millicent's work goes very well. We all send best wishes
