river 8 miles to Mound City, Ill. John has had the measels and has just got over them. George has had the thefoid fever and has just getting around he sais that they are quarted in a brick building 6 company of them he says that each Compy has 3 rooms one to mess in one to sleep in and one for the offecers he sais that they will winter there he gest I have neglected to write about Layfette for he wanted on he toll me not to let his folks know that he was sick and I think that I have let it go longer than I aught to have. Layfette was taken sick the week before we came to Washington and he has been very sick with the fever. We had to leave him at Elmira. He is there now. He is getting so that he is around and we expect him here soon. We got a letter from home fore him and we put a envelope on over it and sent it to Elmira to him. I have wrote all I can this but we wer Mustered in for our pay sunday and we shall get our pay this week or nex up to the 1st of Nov but I mus close. Write as soon as you can so good by give my love to all inquiring friends and take a good share your self I remaine your sone C. A Gates
