On our right in the morning of the 17th the rebels saw us as soon as it began to grow light and opened on us. We were ready for them our lines of the right extended westward from the creek Burnsides was on our left on the East side of the creek, his lines extended North and south. We drove the rebs back steadily till most noon then they fell back on to a heavy piece of Oak woods, and held it till we brought our arty to bear on them about this time Burnside crossed the creek on the left - and carried the Heights around Sharpsburg, and held them. Night put and end to the Bloody Contest. We had won the day and slep on the Battle field, our loss was heay but not so great as the rebs, they loss 5 to our one among our killed are Mansfield, Wounded our Gen. Richardson through the shoulder, Gen Sedswicks, Meagher, Hooker and a Number of Col. Gen Richardson fought all day with a sessession flag around his waist.
