morning of the 12th. battle comenced again before it was day light and lasted untill 9 o clock at night. It is one of the hardest battles our army has fought our Division alone loss 2400 killed and wounded and we were only 6000 strong when we went in to the fight. We have fired about 3000 rounds or about 9 tons of shell and sharpenell. There has been fighting now for 4 day and night. The rebs have a strong posision. They have 2 lines of brest works and forts out on high ground to and big guns mounted on them so We have to cross the river bottom which is about 1 1/2 wide before we can get nere them. then there is high bluffs an there are the first line of breast works
