The boys have just been reading a sketch of Gen. Sumners life in the Syracuse Journal. Gen. Sumner was a great soldier it has been a great wonder to me he has not been killed in battle in sted [sic. instead] of dying at home. At Fair Oaks & White Oak Swamp and Malvern Hill he was in the thickest of the fight at both places he led a bayonet charge but he was not borne to be killed in battle. We have got to go out and drill so I shall have to bring this to a close. There is not much news to write this is all at present so good by from you son C A Gates
