any man ever had. I am that, second, because I have gained, with her, the interest of so sweet and interesting a little family as is constituted by the Cottey girls who have sent me their greetings. If you could only know how deeply I love your "mother," you would understand with what an effort I leave for performance of a duty that may keep us apart for a long time. Yet I am perfectly willing to go. She would not love me so well if I were not eager to do my part enthusiastically in the fight of our country for all that is good and great and holy to mankind. For she is very noble and very brave. I venture to believe that no American woman is sending her husband to war more strengthened by the inspiration of his wife's patriotism and heroism than my Daphne is sending me. It is a great comfort to me to know that she has the devotion of all you girls to cheer her. You will be more than lovely to her all the time, I know. And you will keep her happy and contented until I return. I hope then to thank you in person. On my part I pledge myself to be a good soldier and a good husband,
