Number Seven France, February 3, 1918. Daphne, Dearest,- Tonight I write to you seated at a table in the salle a manger of a typical French inn. I'm having my coffee as I write. With me are Lieutenants Zim-, Frank, and Eisemann, of the crowd. We have just dined famously at a dinner such as one finds not outside of France. It came six courses - soup, entree of stewed giblets with an excellent sauce, string beans, chicken, salad, and cheese and jam. The quantity seemed to indicate that food is not rare in France and the cost was surely not more than such a dinner would have cost at home. Indeed, I don't know a restaurant in America where I could buy the like for the same amount.
