The rafters are decorated with their mottoes. I read them today with great interest - names of battles in which the regiment fought, and slogans such as, "Forward! The way to glory is through courage," "Vanquish first; die afterward." The attitude of the people is very friendly. As I came downtown this evening two little boys joined me, saying "good-bye." That is the one word all of them seem to have learned. I replied "bon soir" and talked to them in French. They were delighted and told me about their fathers. One has been in the trenches three years and a half; the other is in a munitions factory. Farther along two little chaps in sailor togs, on either side of their mother, reached out to shake hands.
