Number Eight February 4, 1918. My only Love,- Would that you could bake your shins with me tonight at the "Sheaf of Gold. " It is just across the street from the "Green Monkey." You must know the place. It is straight from the story-book world. My room is reached from the street through a dark, narrow passage, an abrupt flight of stairs, and outside "hallway" along a court and a heavy door that opens and shuts with a key about the size of an axe. The hill is so steep here that though I am upstairs I am on a level with the court where the donkey carts and the fuel and the empty wine bottles are kept.
