February 7, 1918. My dear Mother, Just to let you know that I am a good and thoughtful son I propose to write you a special letter. I always go on the assumption that the news of what I am doing is reaching you through Daphne. But I'm quite willing and eager to add a letter once in awhile to you in particular. I used to write to a lot of girls. Now I write to one a lot. The only other sweethearts I have to write to are you and my own mother. I am in my billet in a quaint old French town.
