a price without haggling, and it is not one of the things I like about the people that they are quite ready to impose upon our generosity. We find for example that there are two scales of prices at a certain restaurant, one for officers and one for men. When a group of us protested against that kind of hold up, the madame shrugged her shoulders and said, "But, monsieur, we cook in butter for the officers and use grease for the men." Pure evasion of course. These little incidents happen to make us think that the French are not very grateful for what the Americans are doing, but on the whole we get the contrary impression.
