At the foot of the slope we found a creek and the village pond that serves equally well as the communal laundry and the washing place for horses and vehicles. A half dozen men working at a roadside distillery returned our greetings with show of much friendliness. They wanted us to sample their cognac. I took a taste and nearly choked but managed to smile and tell them it was excellent, whereupon they spread wide their arms in satisfaction and nodded many a "Oui, oui." It is an odd experience to see in the strange streets
