of tables one American lieutenant is eating, another is sipping a glass of wine, and two more are deep in a game of checkers. Over against the opposite wall are four French officers in one group and two others, who evidently know English, talking to Arthur. Not the least is a very wise dog sitting in the chair across from me surveying us all with an interested air. It is a typical scene I suppose significant of the way the Americans are filling up certain parts of France. Read the news today of the sinking of the Tuscania. It is our first serious lost. The incident emphasizes for me the great good luck of our getting through the zone safely. Until tomorrow my beautiful. Yours always, Conger.
