I have not had the fire lighted, but the madame assures me "il marche." I intend to have it march for me frequently. Here we pay for our own billets and draw the regulation commutation of quarters. My billet will cost me about $12 a month including cleaning of shoes and attention to clothing, and I shall get $24 a month from the government. The surplus will come in handy to apply on the high cost of food.
