and I wanted someone to celebrate with, and somehow in my telephone talk with you things seemed to be more inviting than ever, - and I was much disappointed that you were occupied. Then again, I have never yet understood why you ran away from me after you had told me you would see me again. But it doesn't matter - there were other times so very nice, and since then others a thousand times nicer - and the best of all to come. I am working like a beaver now - and finding the task intensely interesting. "Putting my best foot forward," you see. I think of you heaps, but not when I ought to be thinking how to beat the Boches. I can hardly believe myself sometimes when I realize how steadfastly and how much I love you. I should never have believed I could do it. My candle is nearly gone, honey. And the bugler is playing Tatoo. I must tatoo into my cool little bed. Kiss me good night? Thank-you. Yours, Con.
