for fear of disclosing information that would enable the enemy to identify the place if it should happen that this letter should fall into his hands. It was a very refreshing journey. Since we arrived I had scarcely been away from the barracks in daylight and so had not learned of the beauty of the country round about. From several points one gets a sweeping view that is truly wonderful. The sun was just right yesterday to paint the fields in strips of old gold and green and brown and to make the streams shimmer all silvery and to set out the white clusters of distant villages. Splendid landscape stuff! I'm going to see if I can't pick up a water color at one of the shops to remember it by and to illustrate it for you until you come to see it.
