He had told his trouble to the madame at the White Horse restaurant and induced her to lend him her bellows. When he found a hot fire in the stove he was much surprised, but undismayed. He promptly dumped more coal in and set to work pumping his bellows into the draft opening. Of course that increased the smokiness of the stove about a hundred fold, and we nearly died before we could stop him. Then W- had a marvelous hunch as to how he could get his socks all clean and pure. He put three pairs into a tin wash pan, filled it with water, and left it on the stove expecting the socks to boil all night. They did! Incidentally, the water all evaporated, and W-'s socks were this morning charred black spots on the pan. We are a very heterogenous lot. The first two I mentioned are from New York. W- is from Kentucky I
