Yesterday I found a new place for diversion. It is the French officers' club. I am in it now, writing while I sip -- nothing but after dinner coffee. I've just been chatting with a major from Des Moines whom I encountered here. We've had a regular celebration of recollections of things back home. This place is less crowded than the Y -- and very interesting. There is a scattering of French officers at the tables, a handsome dashing looking lot in their colorful blue uniforms all plastered with red and gold stripes and decorated with a row of medals. One big old boy is wearing a dark blue coat and scarlet breeches. Hoopee! Our own men look much alike in the uniform olive drab, but they're not less handsome as men -- and there's a certain rough and ready self possession about them that makes one feel that up at the front is where they will be in their element.
