I wish you could see in action as I have the fine American spirit that you describe so well in its relation to this war. The men and boys at the front are surely admirable. Without a kick, - on the other hand, in unfailing good humor - they sweat and freeze in the dirt and mud of roads and trenches living the hardest kind of life, braving all necessary dangers. They seem absolutely fearless. A few days ago I watched a working party doing a task out in the open with shells dropping all around. Yet
