"Fifty-four - forty or fight." April 13, 1918. My dearest,- I got out this afternoon for a stroll into the blessed country. My original intention was to hike at a fast pace for the sake of the exercise. But there was so much by the wayside to attract my attention I couldn't avoid stopping every now and then to look. At first I followed the broad highway that winds slowly up out of the valley in which our village lies. Half-way up I turned into a steep rocky road that is not used for traffic.
