3- May 1936 with the presidential election looming up - P-20-21-22-23 From this introductory chapter Lewis proceeds with the account of the Pres. election 1936. Among the candidates for the Democractic nominations are Franklin D. Rosevelt, Senator Robinson, Francis Perkins as well as Senator Windrip - He is a combination of Huey Long, Father Coughlin, Senator Heflin, Mussolini and Hitler. P. 34 He promised everything to everybody and few doubted but that he would be the candidate. His secretary the crafty Lew Sarazon was supposed to be the brains, the press agent, ghost writer, economic adviser. Walt Trowbridge the Republican standard bearer was an oid line Senator supposed to be a mixture of Hoover and Jim Farley if you can imagine such a combination.. Brings in real & fictitious characters. Lewis points out the conditions which make the campaign of 1936 different from preceding ones. It is Father Coughlin who first thought of the device of buying time on the radio - an invention almost equal in its effect on American life and thought to Henry Ford's conception of selling cars cheap enough so that millions can have them.
