817-19 St. SE Cedar Rapids, Iowa June 18, 1945 Dearest, Didn't get much done this eve. Irene Petrak is to have another operation wed morn, going to be hosp tomorrow night. So I figured I ought to call on her his eve. A particular kind of lily was in bloom so I took her one. I also cut ferns and peonies to put in the cemetery as long as they are such full bloom now. When I got there Georges had put some others there. They were old and faded but I didn't replace them for fear they'd come around later to clean them up and maybe think I yanked theirs off in preference to ours. People get funny ideas awfully easy and I'm not deliberately going to do anything. So our flowers I meant for Linwood I gave to Dora Nunnally as she has no garden. Irene's kids are certainly nice youngsters and they are so big you wouldn't know them. They will manage by themselves while she is at St. Luke's this time. I was suprised and disappointed at Hazel & Earl last Sat eve when they stopped with the baby for a brief visit. Irene had asked Hazel if she'd use Petrak's kitchen and help the kids make preserves of the strawberries that got ripe while she was in the hosp. Hazel didn't want to cook more than 2 cup batch at a time. McIlvains think because Irene has lost stuff
