Crackers 1/2 tea cup shortening 3 tea cups cold water 1 tablespoon salt 1 teaspoon soda 2 tea spoon cream tartar & nearly 5 quarts flour. Then wet up water, after the shortening, soda, cream Tartar & salt is thoroughly rubbed together in the flour. The dough will be very stiff, needs no pounding, nor extra kneading - cut out, prick & bake in a quick oven. Yeast Cakes Mrs. Clark 1 quart hops 3 pints water boil down to a quart 1 tea cup molasses, add a little ginger & some yeast to raise it. Stir in the flour till a spoon will stand up in it. Then knead it with Indian meal to the consistency of bread - then let it stand till it rises - then cut & dry it. Susan's Yeast. small handful of hops 2 small potatos 1 pint water - boil potato soft take off & jam in the jar you make the yeast in - add flour to make a stiff batter - & turn the scalding hop water upon the flour - let stand till cool, add 2 or 3 tablespoon yeast or 1 yeast cake - stir down well - when well risen up keep in a cool place & where it will not freeze.
