Council of National Defense Woman's Committee -- Iowa Division Chairman Mrs. Francis E. Whitley. Webster City Employ Teachers for Deaf Instructor from Buffalo will have charge of New Room. Miss Margaret Wheeler of Buffalo, N. ., has been selected by the school board as instructor in the room for the deaf pupils, which will be instituted in the Clarkson school Sept. 16, a week later than the beginning of the new term in the other grades, owing to the fact that Miss Wheeler will be unable to arrive until that time. Miss Wheeler was highly recommended to the school board. She has been instructor for the deaf in the Buffalo schools for several years. This new institution in Des Moines schools will be for pupils between the ages of 5 to 10 years, whose hearing is defective. Pupils form all over the city of the ages specified will be eligible for the room. The Clarkson school was selected because of its accessibility to street car service. This clipping recalls one of the direct results of the Children's Year work which may not be remembered as having grown out of our registration. I was struck with the number of children with some physical handicap and asked that a record be made of these. IN talking with Lucelia Miller (daughter of Homer A. Miller, Des Moines) now Mrs. Hubert Moore, I expressed my sorrow at the thought that these deaf children could not be taught lip-reading as she had been -- She said that she had been sorry to hear so little
