[page]27.[/page] If a transverse section is made through the stem of the sterile receptacle, two grooves filled with rhizoids are found in the side which corresponds to the ventral surface of the frond. This shows that the stem was formed after the first dichotomous branching of the transformed frond. The branching is subsequently continued in radial directions to form the upper part of the disk. The indentations found on the margin of the disk PL.III. fig. 2. excepting the one on the side corresponding to the ventral surface, represent apical points of the transformed fronds. Near the posterior indentation the stem is inserted and the whole disk is not a radial but a zygomorphic structure.
