[page]28.[/page] In a vertical section of the disk and stem, the latter is seen to be made up of small oblong closely arranged cells. PL. VIII. fig. 1. a. The ventral surface of the disk is covered with scales and rhizoids which arise from the thin layer of epidermal cells PL.VIII. fig. 1. b. Above this is a layer of loose cellular tissue in the upper part of which reticulately scattered air cavities are found. (same plate c.c.). Each air cavity is placed in communication with the external air by means of a simple stoma in the epidermis. The epidermis of the disk on the dorsal side consists of a single layer of simple cells and stomata. The stomata differ from those of the frond in being very simple, consisting of two guard cells.
