[page]40.[/page] the layer, air cavities in which onferra like cells grow up, are found, and, over these again arches the epidermis with a single stoma to each air cavity. The costae which bound the epidermal area are deeper, and the areas are larger than those of M. polymorpha. Each stoma is a simple round opening at the apex of a conical elevation of the epidermal layer of cells, at the center of each epidermal area. This may be seen in a surface section. Just beneath each stoma and surrounded on all sides by the conferra-like cells, is a small patch of slender cells which are colorless or nearly so.
