50. Madotheka platyphylla. This is a large beautiful perennial "Scale Moss" growing out from crevices of rock where deep shade and moisture prevail. It is densely cespitose, the stems irregularly twice pinnate and horizontally overlapping one another. It also grows on trees and decaying logs. Often patches of it are closely fixed tot he perpendicular sides of rocks. PL. XVII. In dry weather it withers and is apparently dead, but with the first rain it regains its full size and color. Its leaves like all those of the Jungermaniaceae grow out on opposite sides of the stem. They
