[page]26[/page] time of transit across the observed wires reduced to the mean or middle wire. Although the distance of one [?um?] from the center may be regarded as its error in collimation, yet it is more convenient in practice that the angular distance of the respective wires should be determined, and thus by a simple addition or subtraction the time of transit over any wire may be reduced to the time of transit over the middle thread. The angular distance of any wire from the center if expressed in time, would evidently be the time required for a star upon the equator to pass from the side thread to the center.
