During a wet season a fungus growth known as smut (Ustilago maydis) destroys some corn. Sometimes it works upon the whole ear and in other cases just upon certain grains. But generally it is found on the end of the ear which is most exposed. Finally one of the greatest enemies of the cornfield is laziness - the remedy for which we know not.
