The troops formed a hollow square with the group of officer-pilots fitted into one side facing the French General and the American Generals. At a signal three Americans and three young Frenchmen advanced and stood in the center of the square. Another officer read the roll of honor. First on it were the names of Norman Hall and Charles Chapman (of Iowa!) and after their names were the words "mort au champ d'honneur" which is a pretty way of saying "killed in battle." Their decorations will be sent to their families. The French general, a magnificent figure, advanced and pinned the Croix de guerre on the breast of each man who had won the honor
