September 5, 1918. Sweetheart, - Already today I have writ to you, is it not so? May I write again? The other letter was hasty and businessy and short in measure. It had a purpose to accomplish. This has none and should therefore be either very dull or very entertaining. I know I ought not to write to you tonight. I don't owe you a letter, and you may get the idea that you have me securely twined about your youngest finger if I do many such obliging and magnanimous things. I should show you more of the iron hand
