1 Introduction The Upper Carboniferous Pennsylvania series of Iowa lies unconformably upon the underlying strata, usually upon the Saint Louis limestone. In places, however the coal measures rest upon some other member of the Lower Carboniferous series, and there are "outliers" of the coal measures upon the Devonian and Siberian formations. The loose, yellow, shaly sandstone north of Iowa City along the river road belongs to one of these "outliers." It is well, therefore, in studying this interesting chapter in Geological History to consider especially that part which is called the Saint Louis stage. 50851
