as belonging to that particular stage. The lower Burlington contains considerable ferric oxide and hence, in weathered portions, has a characteristic reddish brown ting. The divisions between the upper and lower Burlingtons and the Keokuk is marked by bands of chert intermingled with calcareous material. The chert is present in nodular or lenticular masses. The upper Burlington differs from the lower stratigraphically in being more thinly bedded and in containing beds of shale. The Burlington is exposed in Louisa County near Columbus City.
