[page]35.[/page] The Upper Carboniferous series is the uppermost, hence the newest, series of the Paleozoic Group. It is divided into the Des Moines and the Missouri stages. The Des Moines is the lower and contains the productive coal beds. It lies unconformably upon the underlying strata whatever they may be. For the most part in Iowa these underlying strata belong to the Saint Louis stage. The generally popular idea of the Des Moines and Missouri stage is that the Des Moines stage was laid down, then later was covered by the Missouri stage, that is that the Missouri stage overlies the Des Moines in the same way that
