The division between the fixed and movable cheeks is called the facial suture. The segments of the thorax are movable and bear jointed appendages. The abdominal segments are fused forming a caudal shield or pygidium, while on the lower side they support appendages. The lower side of teh head is protected by a well developed plate called, although not appropriately, the hypostome. Some of the appendages of the head act as mouth organs.
