[page]167.[/page] cludes crustaceans in which the body is divided into three longitudinal lobes and the division of head, thorax, and abdomen are distinct. The covering of the head is called the cephalic shield. It is divided into a central raised portion called the glabella, and the fixed and movable cheeks. The movable cheeks bear a pair of compound sessile eyes. The division between the fixed and movable cheeks is called the facial suture. The segments of the thorax are movable and bear jointed appendages. The abdominal segments are fused forming a caudal shield or pygidium, while on the lower side they support appendages. The lower side of teh head is protected by a well developed plate called, although not appropriately, the hypostome. Some of the appendages of the head act as mouth organs.
