Mules are in use in Iowa more than any of the other sources of traction. One mule can pull from one to six loaded cars, depending upon the grades and the condition of the track. The mules are kept in the mine all the time in a specially prepared stable. The stable is ventilated through a special entry or it is situated along the main entry near the shaft.
