good experience for the time when I shall buy myself a resort and become a resort-owner-operator. This just happens to be my chief ambition, the one about which I have crystallized my future. I'm saving all possible dough for the day. Hell with electrical engineering. I think I'll be drafted this fall. My deferment will not exist if I am not then in school. Of our class of 45 senior EE's, all but eight have registered in summer quarter. They will not re-offer the courses in the fall for eight kids. So I'll be out. After all, however, with three years of engineering education it shouldn't be many months before I get a commission. And for making a good officer, nothing can take the place of good old Buck Private basic training. On a lieutenant's pay I can save enough to make the down payment on my resort and my station wagon. O Boy! It's going to be up at Annandale, or near there, where the lakes are all clear, spring-fed, sandy, and near Minneapolis. Resort ownership is the one calling that repays hard work in tangible enjoyment. Success in other lines means deeper and deeper recession to a sedentary existence. That is not for me! 4011 Emerson Ave., N. Mpls., Minn. ------------------------------------ PVT. JOHN L. CHAPMAN: A note on Fantasite. Something like that is a godsend in a place like this. One very easily loses all contact with fandom. Liked the departments best this time, especially the nice big letter section. Simak, Blakely, Warner, and Russell, Samuel D., all good. Harry W. is always interesting here. "Hell Fire" fair -- "Hams and Pros" outstanding. Apologies for Gilbert for leaving out Super's "Sunken Universe" and "Lemmings" in the Annish review. I read the rest of the mag first, and that was enough! I'd like to see Sam Russell on a regular feature -- book reviews especially, at which he's unbeatable, or even MFS Notes. Missed the club news this time -- I was looking forward to some notes on the summer sessions. Prod Morrie for another cover, will you? How about a full page photo spread of Cliff or Saari? Say -- who is this Squanchfoot? --- New Address: 37277732, Flight C, 359th Tech. Sch. Sq., Jefferson Barracks, Mo. ------------------------------------ GERRY DE LA REE, JR. I will never forgive myself for not writing to you after that fine anniversary issue that you brought out. I will try to make up for this oversight by dropping you a line on the May-June number. But before I go into that I must reiterate all the compliments that were published in "Fanta-scripts" and add a few of my own. The illustrations, photos, vari-colored mimeoing, interesting articles and all the rest that went into the magnificent issue were all of the highest type of fan caliber. Congratulations, and I am looking forward to many more birthdays for The Fantasite. Now to the current issue. Cover is nothing special, and since I plan to rate each item separately, I'll skip the front page. The editorial is not exactly an epic, but then it wasn't supposed to be. Because of the picture I'll give it an 8. "Fantasiana" is an interesting bit and certainly does not stick to one point. It's also worth an 8. "Forgotten Mysteries" in my mind is tops in the issue and comes to the front with a 10! This type of review always interests me. Gilbert and Jenkins didn't go so well in their "Among the Hams and Pros", so I'll only give them a 6. "The Tale of the Hooten" was to my liking, but rather short. I agree with Yerke; Van Houten is a crack-pot, but a nice guy for all of that. Ackerman's "Exclusion Act -- #2" was not up to his usual standards, and both this and Yerke's titbid get 7s. "Hell Fire" was okay and also rates a 7. "Fanta-scripts" was nice and long, as one would expect after a fine annish, and for that reason I'll be generous with a 9. The back cover is quite a let-down after some other things Morrie has done and only rates a 6. ((It was not intended to be anything elaborate; it was Murrie's first drawing for The Fantasite, made and published a year and a half ago, when he had done no art-work for about a year previously; and it was dashed off in twenty minutes while he was working on his job in a photographic studio. SDR)) Issue as a whole rates 7.5, and in my mind that's definitely okay. If you have room somewhere in the next issue, please announce that Sun Spots has been suspended. Roddy Gnetz has moved to Pennsylvania, and without his help in the financial line I cannot continue to print our fanzine. If I can get ahold of a
