Our two dimensional ancestors GRAPH WALDEYER ~ Graph tells us our fore-fathers cavorted gayly about in only two dimensions - we're frankly sceptical ______________________ Scientists have spent years digging into prehistoric cave dwellings for evidence of the life and sulture of the cavemen. Among their findings were the marvelous "paintings" on the walls of the caves - work supposedly indicating a very high degree of artistic ability of the part of the ancient cave-dwellers. They have marveled at the enduring paint apparently used in these drawings that have enabled them to persist for many thousands of years while humanity was evolving into the three dimensional, intelligent creatures of today, such as science fiction fans. Why do I take the trouble to point out the obvious fact that humans of today are three dimensional beings? Simply because our ancestors were not: they possessed only two dimensions. It is obvious that scientists completely misinterpreted the significance of those alleged paintings on the walls of the caves. For those supposedly painted figures are nothing less than our ancestors themselves - or rather - their fossilized, two dimensional remains. Let us then, briefly review the start of two dimensional life on earth. In prehistoric times many contours and surfaces over the earth acquired, by a natural process, a film like coating one molecule thick. This was particularly true of the eroded smooth walls of caves, which were protected from harsh elements. This film, spread over the cave walls, actually constituted a two dimensional atmosphere for the two dimensional beings that were to evolve in "Flatland." In this infinitely thin mono-molecular film, two dimensional life stirred. During millions of two dimensional years it evolved. Finally it culminated into two dimensional human beings breathing with two dimensional lungs the mono-molecular atmosphere of Flatland, thinking two dimensional thoughts, making two dimensional love (admittedly difficult of visualization by us three dimensionals), and keeping the cave walls plastered with succeeding generations of two dim (next page) [image]I don't wanta!
