Live" by Gergen brings up some very interesting points of discussion. Too bad I can't dwell on them as long as I'd like. His premise that a true scientist does not work with the help of imagination is open to serious question. A consideration of the psychology of creative activity is dominated by the use of imagination. A scientist creates, I believe. That, too, is open to question to those who believe a scientist only discovers, not invents. I hold to the "invent" theory, and therefore place great importance on the ability to imagine. Can a person think of an item never before experienced by him actually or vicariously in whole or part? I believe the answer is no. This does not contradict or dispose of imagination. The mind does not create out of nothing. What are the thoughts on this of Spaceways' readers? " Comments could be written about Gergen's devotion to Einstein and his Theory ("theory" capitalized by Gergen). He partakes of those cited by Charles Fort, who think that Einstein is a superhuman, almost a god. " Gergen should inform himself about that character J. W. Campbell, Jr. " All of Gergen's arguments boil down to this: it happened here, it could happen there. It refers to life. What is life? Are certain conditions necessary for the phenomenon to exist? If so, are they duplicated elsewhere? Is life a single type phenomenon, or can it exist in a form unknown to us? If so, is it still life? " Is live the goal of this "ruling intelligence"? Or is it an accident, an unforseen chemo-physical occurrence? Therefore, the worlds of space were not made for life. What were they made for? We don't know. We didn't make them. " .....Have you noticed the number of letters in most of the fans' last names? Count the letters in the soldier fans' names which you give on page 18. And half of those on top of page 19. This is a pretty big percentage. Raymond Washington, Jr., Live Oak, Florida, asserts: Ave Atque Vale! was a very fine piece of work. I glee at reading tributes and stuff like that. However, a terrific satire could be written on the article; why don't you pick out some good fan writer (harrumph! Raym has lots of spare time) to sort of make a farce out of a similar article. Or would that be blasphemy? " The Rascality of the Russian Rugcutter. Too deep for me, Friends, unless the Russian Rugcutter was just a guy who stripped (literally) people of their wealth & stuff. And his dump was a gyp joint. And--there warn't no magic in the green stone and the forest, either. Right?.....This rates a 6. Look Before You Leap, Dammit--I meant Cynic--who I supposed was Lowndes all along. For me, words must be ear-pleasing and melodious and rhythmic, and that title is certainly not. It leaves one hanging up in the air, so to speak. Try these wonderful phrases RayMade up, for sheer joy at their ear-pleasingness: "The Nazi Regime Will Crumble, When Croetia Joins the Axis". It doesn't make much sense, but doesn't it sound beautiful? Try this: "Hell's Belle's & Roosevelt." (So wot if I am a Republican? I like underdogs.) " .....Komments on the KontrolRoom: I am directly responsible for Harry Schmarje's change from Harris to the New Harry Schmarje. When everyone was banning his stuff from their publications, I suggested that he write an article apologizing a la Gilbert. this article will appear in the third issue of Sigh, - Anti - Fun as Ackerman named my mag. (I'm grateful to Forry for naming it that.) Remember, fans the third ish of Scientifun. 12 pages, too. Corp. C. E. Mulrain, Hdq. Sqd. 34th ADG, San Bernardino, Calif., pens: I was indeed surprised to find that you were going to do something about fanzines for us fellows in the service. Surprised and pleased--frankly I get no greater enjoyment out of science fiction than being able to read some fan's efforts in the way of publication, written material, etc. I read the prozines--but they are minus something that can only be found in fanzines. " Fanzines are the material expressions of the feelings of a man, woman, boy, or girl, whose thoughts are based on a futuristic day dream of a much better, cleaner, and ad-
