He merely beat the precessional frequency signal with an accurate tuning fork (vacuum tube controlled freq) signal which was good to 1/10⁶. He displayed the beat signal on a photographic record on a cathode ray scope, alongside a crystal controlled 50 c.p.s. signal. For example: Beat frequency with second harmonic of 1000 c.p.s. signal was 2.784 ± 0.005 c.p.s. Precessional frequency 1997.22 good to one part in 4 x 10⁵.
