Precession of the atoms in the ambient magnetic field with magnetic moments preferentially aligned this would give an induced signal in a coil around the sample. Bell also mentioned optical modulations as another method of detection. He stated that Packard at Varian Associates had estimated that a rocket or satellite-borne magnetometer of about one lb. weight could be made. Much less power consumption required than for proton precession magnetometer also ! ONR has a small amount of money available for the purpose.
