Third Anniversary Issue - - Page Eleven the improvements, such as typed pages, and an index of ASTOUNDING STORIES, were retained. General interest, however, took an upward slant, Dollens was gaining the confidence of numerous fans and was scooping the fan field on many Items of Interest. It is safe to say that issue ten of the Collector was a distinct success from many viewpoints; and certainly an improvement in interest even over the big December number. Throughout this account I have bean restrained by the fact that during all of which I have written so far I had little or no knowledge of the Collector. I was not a subscriber during the first nine issues. I have depended upon correspondence and my file of the magazines. But upon receipt of the tenth issue of the magazine, I made the acquaintance of Editor Dollens and without suppressing my modesty, I dare say that I played considerably more than a small part in the history of the magazine thereafter. When one first breaks into the fan field, it is a matter of many months before the fan partially understands the way things are run in that peculiar field. I remember how I became acquainted with the Collector. It was during one of my periodic visits to Bill Miller an East Orange fan prominent at one time; but now no longer active. During the course of the conversation, I tentatively turned to the matter of the high literary standards of the fan mags of the time, and the possibility of placing material In any or all of them. Said Bill, "Oh, they'll be glad to get material." "What?" said I, in a truly surprised fashion. "Sure." "Even from me?" "Even from you."
